The past two years, Godby had no answers for stopping or even slowing down the powerful Madison County rushing attack. On Friday night, the Cougars found all the right answers as junior RB Lavorie Johnson rushed for 87 yards, and two touchdowns to power Godby to their first ever win over the Madison County Cowboys 21-14.

Finally, Godby head coach Shelton Crews can take a deep sigh of relief as his Cougars were the ones making the big plays.Cougars surprised Madison County. Leading the way was a spirited effort from the Godby defense, which held the explosive Cowboy attack to just 112 yards of total offense in the first half.

"Defensive Coordinator Mike McClenton had a great game plan coming in and the kids just executed very well and slowed down that strong running game from Madison County. It's never easy to simulate that offense in practice, but it was a total team effort tonight in getting this win. I'm really just so proud of these kids because they've had to overcome so much adversity throughout the season in losing some very close games so this one is pretty satisfying," explained Coach Crews.

With two weeks to prepare after an open week, the Cougars knew getting out to a strong start to kick-off their game with Madison County was absolutely a must. The Cougars got the start they were looking for after a long completion to kick-off the game to WR Chris St. Hilaire for 31 yards. Following a key pass interference call, the Cougars then turned to their biggest weapon in junior RB Lavorie Johnson who scored two plays later on a 37 yards scamper giving Godby an early 7-0 lead.

Even with the early score, Madison County looked poise to answer that touchdown after Marterrius McDaniel broke free into the Godby secondary for an electrifying 71 yard scamper before being dragged down at the Cougar 11 yard line. Unfortunately for Madison County, the drive stalled as Godby forced a 4th and 2. As they did most of the night, the Cougar front seven came up big, stuffing a quarterback keeper by Kelvin Singletary.

Two plays later, Godby surprised the Cowboys with another stunning scoring drive, but this time through the air as sophomore QB Dennis Andrews dropped back in pocket, made a pump fake, and then threw a perfect 79 yard strike to Chris St. Hilaire to extend the lead to 14-0. The large contingency of Madison fans stood stunned as their beloved Cowboys in just two big plays dug a hole and fell behind by two scores heading into the halftime break.

"We had a few plays that we didn't feel their defense had seen with our passing game. I have to say our receivers made big play after play with our passing game," replied Godby QB Dennis Andrews.

The effort in the first half with the passing attack was a far cry from the 11 yard performance the Cougars put together just a few weeks ago against Andrew Jackson.

The second half didn't start off much better for the Cowboys. When they made a big defensive play, key penalties halted all their momentum. That never more evident then when Cowboys defensive back Jermaine Hart stepped in front of an errant Andrews pass and returned the interception 65 yards. However, the big defensive stop was negated after a pass interference call against Madison County kept the drive alive. Godby would make the Cowboys pay for that mistake when later in the drive, Lavorie Johnson scored his second touchdown of the night on a 4-yard blast to extend the lead to 21-0.

Throughout the third quarter, the Godby defense continued to stymie the Madison County offense headlined by a strong defensive line powered by DT Jerricho Lee and DE Kamerin Davis After three quarters of play, the Cowboys could only muster three first downs, and just 45 yards of total offense.

Even with the 21-0 lead, Godby head coach Shelton Crews knew Madison County all too well, expecting a last minute burst from the Cowboys. Crews looked like a prophet when just six left in the game, Madison County offense started to show signs of life after two long runs of 23 and 21 yards by Marterrius McDaniel. Just three plays later in the drive, McDaniel finally put the Cowboys on the board with a 12 yard touchdown run to cut the lead down to 21-7.

The very next kick-off for the Cowboys probably didn't ease the nerves of Coach Crews either when Madison County successfully converted an onside kick inside the Cougars 45 yard line. Then on the very first play from scrimmage, QB Kelvin Singletary did a little surprising of his own against the Godby defense as he found Will Turner on a quick hard slant. Turner would do the rest easily outracing the Cougars to the end zone, and in a blink of an eye, and more importantly in a two span, the Cowboys were quickly back in the game.

"Madison County came back with a flurry in the final minutes, so we knew our work was certainly cut out for us to stop the bleeding," replied Andrews.

After dominating the game for three quarters, the momentum was clearly on the side of the visitors from Boot Hill as the Cowboys notched their first three and out series against the Cougar offense of the game. Then with just two left in the game, Madison County went on one of their patent drives, which assuredly looked like the tying score. The Cowboys got a few tough runs from McDaniel and after Xavier Brown hauled in a 12 yard reception down to the Cougar 6 yard line, it almost looked like d? vu for Godby with Madison County possibly pulling out another close one over the Cougars.

The Godby defense then changed all the momentum on a key 3rd down and goal when defensive Coordinator Mike McClenton pulled out his bags of tricks and called for a linebacker blitz. The move caught Madison County completely off guard as the Cougars sacked Singletary for a 7 yard loss. With the Cowboys then facing a 4th and goal, an obvious passing situation Godby defensive back Terrance Condry sealed the game as Singletary threw into double coverage and Condry stepped in front of the errant pass as the Cougars tasted a huge 21-14 district win over their rivals from Madison County.

"Our defense was lights out tonight, but they've been like that all year - keeping us in games. Anytime we need a play those guys deliver. Overall, it was a big district win and it helps with our confidence. But it's also going to show how we can handle success throughout the rest of the season," explained Andrews.

With the win, Godby improved to 2-3, and more importantly 1-0 in the district. Next week, the Cougars will clash with Chiles. In a three team district, the Cougars also positioned themselves for a possible district title if they can knock off Rickards on November 6.

Madison County on the other hand will look to bounce back next week as they hook up with the Lincoln Trojans, who earlier tonight defeated Wakulla. The Cowboys dropped to 4-1 on the season.
