THE OUTLOOK: Two teams battling for Polk County pride and the early lead in the district 10-6A. Lake Gibson and Winter Haven both made the post-season last year and both have experienced QB's.
For Winter Haven, Borders has inherited the starting job from his brother Levi - but has eight games from last year, plus the four from this year, under his belt. He led the Blue Devils to a come-from-behind win over Kathleen (27-21) two weeks ago.
Other than that, the Blue Devils have rarely been challenged, knocking off Auburndale by 19, Haines City by 49 and George Jenkins by 49 - so a close game with Kathleen might be just what coach Charlie Tate wanted.
For Lake Gibson, it's been a series of close games - except for the last two. After struggling with George Jenkins (21-14) to start the season, the Braves beat Lake Wales 21-10 and Auburndale 19-10. The offense seems to have found its niche with 40+ point performances against Sebring and Tenoroc.
Obviously, this game will feature two of the best running backs in the area with a possible preview of Saturday's SEC clash. Lane (verbally committed to Florida) for Winter Haven and Swanson (verbally committed to LSU) going at it. QB Trey Congdon for Lake Gibson may be the difference maker.
Prediction: Lake Gibson 24, Winter Haven 22
