JACKSONVILLE -- We will now have a new state champion in class 2A as University Christian knocked off North Florida Christian at home 44-31 Friday night.
University Christian jumped out to an early 24-10 lead going into the half and began the second half with an interception for a score by junior LB Tamarius Bowes that put the fighting Christians up 32-10 early in the third.
Thrown for a bit of a shock, The Eagles needed a spark and would get just that when Marcus Clarkrushed for a touchdown on the first play of their next offensive possession.
This was followed up with a blocked punt deep in Christian territory leading to a 15-yard touchdown run by Clark for his second score of the day.
What looked like a potential blowout was now anyone's game with the Eagles erasing a 22 point deficit in a matter of minutes, now only trailing 32-24.
Following a missed field-goal attempt, the Christians would give the Eagles a dose of their own medicine blocking the Eagles punt and scooping for a touchdown with 7:09 left in the game.
The Eagles would have no offensive answer with the Christians defense holding strong, giving the offense a chance to put this one away when Bowes would score with 2:35 remaining in the game.
North Florida Christian would tack on a late touchdown but this night belonged to University Christian who made big play after big play all night.
Jumping out to a big lead definatly played a huge advantage to University Christian, because the Eagles came back fast but simply ran out of gas late in the second half.
The Christians converted on all of their two-point conversions except for one late in the game. It will be interesting to see if the Christians can keep this up because we all know how important a one to two point swing can be in playoff games and let's not forget field goals.
University Christian will now travel to Daytona to face Warner Christian who dominated Lake Marry Prep this week.
