BELLE GLADE - It was all about Dwyer from start to finish.
The Panthers (1-0) began their regular season in the Muck and came away with a convincing 35-0 win over the Glades Central Raiders (0-1).
Dwyer RB Alonzo Smith broke several tackles and sidestepped several Glades Central defenders for a 51-yard touchdown run that put his team up 6-0 with 8:55 left in the first quarter.
Glades Central's offense couldn't get going, as Dwyer's defense forced them into a series of three-and-outs early on.
One of Glades Central's failed drives resulted in a special teams score for Dwyer ATH Shawun Lurry, who returned a 50-yard punt return for a touchdown with 11:42 left in the first half.
A two-point conversion run by Smith extended Dwyer's lead to 14-0.
Glades Central's only real chance at scoring a touchdown came late in the first half, when QB Giovanni Lugo led his team to Dwyer's red zone area.
With just 6.8 seconds left, Lugo threw a nice pass to WR Ronquavion Tarver, who ran a corner route toward the end zone.
One problem: Tarver's pass was broken up by Dwyer's Clint Stephens in the end zone as time expired in the first half.
The game got out of hand early in the second half, as Dwyer QB Daniel Parr threw a quick slant pass to Stephens, who raced to the end zone for an 80-yard touchdown that extended Dwyer's lead to 21-0 with 11:42 left in the third.
Later in the quarter, Parr threw his second touchdown pass, this time to WR Johnnie Dixon for a 10-yarder that gave Dwyer a 28-0 lead with 1:16 left.
The final score came from Dwyer RB Cornelius Smith, who punched it in the end zone on a 15-yard run with 4:50 left in the fourth quarter.
"We worked really hard to get this win," Dixon said. "We needed to be focused in order to get the job done."
Dwyer head coach Jack Daniels said he was happy with his team's execution on offense, defense and special teams against Glades Central.
"It feels good to come out here and play as well as we did against a great program," Daniels said. "We took advantage of the opportunities that were presented to us."
Dwyer's next game is at Jupiter on Sept. 5, while Glades Central's next game is at home against Palm Beach Central (Wellington) on Sept. 6.
