Two early turnovers made it seem as though Manatee High would have trouble competing against Friendship Academy.
But looks can be deceiving.
After the first three offensive plays of the game for Manatee, Friendship Academy registered two interceptions. The Manatee defense would wind up only giving up one score off of these turnovers and slowly took the game over from that point.
From there, the Manatee rushing game took over. After the opening score, Manatee outscored Friendship Academy 23-13.
Friendship Academy's downfall would be turnovers and excessive penalties to set Manatee up with good field position.
Friendship was unable to stop Manatee drives, especially on third down.
This allowed the Canes to control the ball and score at will. Manatee quarterback Joshua Meyer was a key component of keeping the drives going.
When the passing game wasn't working, he used his legs to convert and even score touchdowns. Friendship cornerback Jalen Tabor was a huge factor on defense, intercepting a shovel pass on the second play of the game and chasing down Kelvin Mcknight on fourth down to prevent a first down and eventual touchdown. Without Tabor, the score could have been more lopsided.
The primary driving force for Manatee was the running game and this was opened up by the offensive line which responded well to everything the defense threw at them.
