MADISON, FL - Trinity Christian quarterback Kevin Toliver II scored the game's only touchdown with 28 seconds remaining as the Conquerors defeated the Madison County Cowboys, 6-3, in Madison on Friday night.
Toliver, a Rivals Five-star for the class of 2015 - showed why he has the highest rating possible.
In the final minutes of the game, Trinity faced a fourth-and-16 from just outside the Madison County 25-yard-line, when Toliver (committed to LSU) dropped back to pass, pulled the ball down and sprinted to the left for a 17-yard gain to keep the Conquerors' drive alive. Three plays later, Toliver had trouble with the snap but picked up the fumble and dashed around the right corner for a game-winning eight-yard touchdown run.
Though Madison County had one final opportunity with the ball, Trinity defensive back David Crowley intercepted Cowboy quarterback Akevious Williams as time expired
Neither team was able to break through on the scoreboard in what was a fast-moving first half. With Toliver under center, the Conqueror offense moved the ball into Madison County territory on multiple occasions, but the Cowboy defense played disciplined football, holding their ground to keep the game scoreless.
Trinity's best chance to score in the first half came late in the second quarter. On a possession that began inside the Conquerors' own 15-yard line, tailback Jalin Buie brought his team deep into Cowboy territory on a pair of first down runs. But with his team facing a third and long from just outside the Madison County 25, Toliver saw a pair of his passes fall incomplete as the Conquerors turned it over on downs.
On the flip side, the Conqueror defense stood strong against Madison County's ground-based attack. Like the visitors, the Cowboys drove into opposing territory in the first half but could not break through.
Madison County scored the game's first points in the fourth quarter, as tailback Eric Bright brought the Cowboys inside the five-yard line. But Trinity's defense held, forcing a 23-yard field goal attempt for Madison County's Zach Money. Money's kick was true, giving the Cowboys a 3-0 edge.
For Trinity, Buie carried the load, totaling 180 yards on 24 rushing attempts. Toliver completed 6 of 16 pass attempts for 66 yards in addition to his rushing touchdown.
