Patriots roll by Clay - 66-8
ORLANDO- There was jubilation on the American Heritage sideline as the clock read all zeros, but the game had been over for hours.
American Heritage routed Clay 66-8 to clinch the 2013 5A state championship. The Patriots scored on their first play from scrimmage and never looked back.
"I'm just so happy right now," Patriots quarterback Torrance Gibson said, "this has been our goal since I was a freshman."
American Heritage lead by 20 at the end of the first quarter and went into the locker room with 40-0 lead. A running clock was used during almost the entire second half.
Patriots quarterback Torrance Gibson (2015 4 star ATH) went 9 for 10 passing for 161 yards and two touchdowns. He added 154 on the ground, including a 78-yard untouched run on American Heritage's first play of the game.
Running back Sony Michel (Georgia commit) ran over, around, and through Blue Devil defenders all afternoon. Michel finished his high school career with 98 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 13 attempts.
That 40-0 lead didn't hold long, though. Tarvarus McFadden took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Then Isaiah McKenzie took a punt 65 yards for a TD. The Patriots scored 13 points in the third quarter before they snapped the ball.
It wasn't just offensive domination for the Patriots, though.
American Heritage kept a powerful Blue Devil rushing attack in check all game and nearly shut Clay out. If not for a 35-yard touchdown run by quarterback Wesley Weeks late in the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils would have been held off the scoreboard completely.
American Heritage forced seven three-and-outs, completely shutting down the Blue Devils.
