Muncie excited to check out Ohio State
Don't look now but the Ohio State Buckeyes have decided to really make an effort in the state of Texas when it comes to football recruiting. Of course the Texas Longhorns are going to do everything in their power to grab who they want in the state but Ohio State has done a good job in recent years of making it on the short list of several key players in the Lone Star State.
After picking up a commitment from Austin (Texas) Westlake linebacker David Durham the Buckeyes have set their sights on Klein (Texas) Oak high school safety Luke Muncie. The rising senior checks in at 6-foot-3, 210-pounds and hits like a ton of bricks on the field while possessing sub 4.5 speed to boot.
Muncie is starting to pick up offers and is reporting a verbal offer from the Buckeyes and is just awaiting the paperwork after being checked out by Ohio State recruiting coordinator John Peterson. Muncie is very interested in the Buckeyes and plans on making a trip in the near future to check things out.
"Yeah I am going up to Columbus next Friday, (March) sixth I think," Muncie said. "I am going to fly up there and look around and see what they offer and all that kind of stuff."
What is it about Ohio State that would make Muncie hop a plane to check things out at this point of the process?
"I have heard a lot of good things about (Ohio State)," Muncie said. "I just want to get there myself and just see it with my own eyes for what they really have. The tradition, the winning and it is just a huge school
what all can be better than all of that."
For those of you who are familiar with Klein (Texas) there is another current Buckeye who hails from that part of Texas.
"I go to the rival school of where J.B. Shugarts went," Muncie said.
When a player from south of the Mason-Dixon Line looks at the Buckeyes one of the first questions that comes up is about the weather. Texas (for the most part) has two seasons, hot and hotter while the state of Ohio has a mixture of all four seasons over the year.
"The cold doesn't bother me at all," Muncie said. "All of my grandparents and family live up in Iowa and Illinois so I go up there three times a year and I also lived up in Iowa for about two years."
The big hitter from Texas already has offers from a pair of in-state schools in Texas A&M and Houston but is also looking at several out of state schools. Is there any pressure to stay in state or is there a desire to move on?
"I am not really particularly looking to get out of state or anything like that, (Ohio State) is just a great school and everything," Muncie said.
The Buckeyes have talked to Muncie already about a position if he were to so choose Ohio State as his college destination and while it would appear that Muncie has the size to play safety or linebacker that the Buckeyes might look to draw on that combination for a different spot.
"They are talking more about (the star position)," Muncie said. "That is definitely what they are talking about doing."
Muncie said in a previous interview with Rivals.com that he would like to announce either on July 20th (his father's birthday) or on August first in order to get it out of the way of his senior campaign.
"I just want to get it out of the way mainly and be able to focus on my senior season," Muncie said. "My ultimate goal is to win a championship and then after that be able to worry about college. I just want to make that commitment."
So that means Muncie will have to get on the ball with the clock ticking but he is still unsure if he will participate in too many organized summer events.
"I don't know yet if I am going to do any camps," Muncie said. "I haven't really thought about it yet so we will see but I just don't know right now."
