Class 1A preview: Breaking down all eight games

SOCIAL: Follow on Twitter | Friend on Facebook

As we head to the first round of the post-season, FlaVarsity.com breaks down each classification - starting with Class 1A.

The defending champ - Jefferson County - made the post-season, but Chipley did not. JeffCo will come into the playoffs with a 3-7 record, and as a district runner-up.

The favorite from the 'north' (west) has to be both Northview and Holmes County - but don't overlook Liberty County.

In the 'south' (east) - it's a logjam with good teams everywhere, including two unbeatens - Trenton and Union County. The sleeper may be Lafayette, who won the district over Jefferson County.

Keep your eye on Newberry, however, as the Panthers are playing very good football.

Cottondale at Northview

The Skinny: The Hornets and Chiefs do battle in Bratt as Northview hopes to be the 'team to beat' from the 'west/north' in Class 1A. Cottondale has given up 87 points in its last two games, and faces a Northview team coming off a tough loss to West Florida.

vs
COTTONDALE
NORTHVIEW
Prediction: NORTHVIEW

Freeport at Graceville The Skinny: Freeport won the first match-up back in September 27-7- one of only two games that the Graceville Tigers were held to a touchdown or less. Graceville has turned on the offense and averages 30 points a game. Freeport has been scoring points lately too - averaging 44 points in the last two contests.
vs
FREEPORT
GRACEVILLE
Prediction: GRACEVILLE

Blountstown at Holmes County

The Skinny: The Blue Devils are one of the favorites to win it all in Class 1A and only 4A Marianna has been able to slow down the Devils. Port St. Joe did manage a 28-20 win but aside from that game, Holmes County has averaged 44 points per contest. Blountstown has played a tough schedule, falling to Lafayette to close out the season and while a 6-4 record may not sparkle, the Tigers can bite at any time.

vs
BLOUNTSTOWN
HOLMES COUNTY
Prediction: BLOUNTSTOWN

Bozeman at Liberty County The Skinny: Liberty County has pretty much been the quiet team from the 1A panhandle all season. The Bulldogs knocked off every class A school they faced, with the two losses coming to Bay and Marianna. Bozeman has come a long way this year, but can the Bucks avenge a 28-14 loss earlier in the season?
vs
BOZEMAN
LIBERTY COUNTY
Prediction: LIBERTY COUNTY

Hilliard at LaFayette Co. The Skinny: After starting the season 1-2, the Lafayette Hornets have stormed through the last eight games with a mission - get to Orlando. Standing in the way are the Hilliard Flashes - with legendary coach Paul Whittenberg, who has announced his retirement at the end of this season. Will the Flashes be able to prolong that decision?
vs
HILLIARD
LAFAYETTE
Prediction: LAFAYETTE

Jefferson County at Trenton The Skinny: The Tigers are limping into the post-season at 3-7, but have won two straight. Trenton is 10-0 and favored to win the 'south' (west) in class 1A. In order for that to happen, Trenton must take the title from Jefferson. Strength of schedule isn't an issue for Jeffco, - which has faced SEVEN playoff teams this season - so Trenton would make eight out of 11. On the contrary, Trenton has faced only two post-season participants - beating Lafayette and Hilliard.
vs
JEFFERSON COUNTY
TRENTON
Prediction: JEFFERSON COUNTY

Crescent City at Union County

The Skinny: Union County is another heavily-favored team to advance to the title game, but must get by Crescent City and Florida commit Caleb Brantley. The Tigers have the firepower to score from anywhere on the field. Crescent City is just one year removed from a 2-8 season in 2011. Union County averages 28 points a game and the defense is relatively stingy as well - giving up nine.

vs
CRESCENT CITY
UNION COUNTY
Prediction: UNION COUNTY

Newberry at Wildwood The Skinny: : A tough loss for Newberry two weeks ago at Union County as the Panthers went down 10-7. Wildwood comes into the game with a 4-6 record - having beaten only one team with a winning record. This one looks like the Panthers will get a rematch with Union County.
vs
NEWBERRY
WILDWOOD
Prediction: NEWBERRY
