Class 5A South Preview

SOCIAL: Follow on Twitter | Friend on Facebook

We continue the post-season playoff preview with the 5A south brackets. Eight big games - including what should be some very interesting first-round matchups.

The favorite from the south is - well - we really don't have a 'favorite' yet. American Heritage-Plantation has lost only one game - to Bolles. Merritt Island has dropped only one game - to Cocoa. Defending champ Miami Norland is loaded again.. then there's Palmetto, Southeast and Lake Wales... and don't forget about Immokalee.

Did we say it was up in the air? We thought so.

Palmetto at Auburndale

The Skinny: Typically having the home field tends to have its advantages but you won't find that in this matchup. Palmetto thumped Auburndale 49-0 to open the playoffs in 2011 and we may be on track for a repeat performance. Look for the Palmetto wide receiver tandem of Shaquille Harris and Cory Crawford to have big games. Auburndale started the season 0-3 but bounced back to win six of the last seven games and win the district. Palmetto started the season 7-0 before being blasted by Manatee and Southeast. Can the Tigers refocus in time for the post-season?

vs
PALMETTO
AUBURNDALE
Prediction: PALMETTO

Lake Wales at Southeast The Skinny: Lake Wales and Southeast know each other all too well, having played each other for two consecutive years back in the 09' and 10' playoffs, with both teams splitting the series. Now, after taking a one year break from each other in the layoffs the two teams find themselves facing off again in a so called rubber match game, that on paper looks like it will be as exciting as the last two. Southeast brings with them a balanced offensive attack averaging roughly 150 yards through the air and ground while Lake Wales finds its offense through the running back lead by a pair of talented tailbacks in Tony Reeves and Justin Henderson. This should be a fun one folks.
vs
LAKE WALES
SOUTHEAST
Prediction: SOUTHEAST

Golden Gate at East Lee

The Skinny: No tricks or surprises in this game, Golden Lake (3-8) made the playoffs by virtue of defeating Lely in a three-team district race and now will have to go on the road to advance. East Lee County (6-4) rolls big in this contest behind the legs of junior RB Kendall Sawyer.

vs
GODLEN GATE
EAST LEE
Prediction: BAKER COUNTY

Estero at Immokalee The Skinny: It's been over a decade since Estero has seen the postseason and it could be short lived. Immokalee despite having some injuries still has several big time playmakers including standout senior QB Tshumbi Johnson. Immokalee should have no problem in this contest. Then again, we've seen the Indians lose games they had no business losing this year.
vs
ESTERO
IMMOKALEE
Prediction: IMMOKALEE

Jensen Beach at Merritt Island The Skinny: Coach Jeff Mclean's Merritt Island Mustangs will host Jensen Beach. The Mustangs only defeat on the season came to hands of Cocoa midway through the season. Other than that the Mustangs have looked impressive while Jensen Beach has had its ups and downs placing second in their district behind Glades Central.
vs
JENSEN BEACH
MERRITT ISLAND
Prediction: MERRITT ISLAND

Rockledge at Glades Central The Skinny:Rockledge and Glades Central have met six times out of the past 10 post seasons so we could be in store for a fantastic opening round matchup. The Raiders clinched their district last week while Rockledge placed second in a competitive district. The Rock fans are all too familiar with the playoffs coming through Belle Glade. Nice to see these two rivals back in the thick of things.
vs
ROCKLEDGE
GLADES CENTRAL
Prediction: GLADES CENTRAL

Miami Jackson at American Heritage-Plantation

The Skinny: Miami Jackson might have taken one from Heritage last postseason but it's a new year and the Generals may be in for a long night. American Heritage is talented and fast led behind standout RB Sony Michel. The Patriots win and win big as they have some unfinished business to take care of.

vs
MIAMI JACKSON
AMERICAN HERITAGE
Prediction: AMERICAN HERITAGE

Dillard at Miami Norland The Skinny: : Norland will look to continue the journey back to Orlando but this matchup may be a little closer than what some may think. Don't let the 5-5 record of Dillard fool you, Dillard has an excellent defense but the Vikings do as well. Experience may give Norland the edge in this contest as the defending state champs march on.
vs
DILLARD
MIAMI NORLAND
Prediction: MIAMI NORLAND
