8A south - the full monty

SOCIAL: Follow on Twitter | Friend on Facebook

The post-season preview continues as the biggest classification gets looked at.

Defending state champion Plant and runner-up Miramar both made it - and both have shots at getting back to Orlando.

However, this particular class features some wide-open races and some new and old faces.

How about Fletcher, last year's underdog. The Senators open - again - with Lake Brantley. Or Cypress Bay - will this be the year for the Lightning - who've been oh so close.

Don't overlook Northwestern, who is playing very well at this point - and the Explorers may be the team to watch.

Park Vista at Seminole Ridge

The Skinny: The Hawks opened 0-2 and haven't lost since. That said, one of the losses came the first Friday in September, 21-7, to Park Vista. However, the Cobras (8-2) are coming off a 31-10 loss to a West Boca team that finished 3-6. Can Seminole Ridge keep playing the style of ball it has gotten used to?

vs
PARK VISTA
SEMINOLE RIDGE
Prediction: PARK VISTA

Palm Beach Gardens at Palm Beach Central The Skinny: This is a rematch of a defensive struggle won 10-6 by the visiting Gators (8-1) on Sept. 14. The Broncos (8-2) were defeated 15-6 at Royal Palm Beach a week later but haven't lost since. Look for another low-scoring game. This one might be the best game in the area.
vs
PALM BEACH GARDENS
PALM BEACH CENTRAL
Prediction: PALM BEACH GARDENS

Miramar at South Plantation

The Skinny: Miramar may be just 6-4, but it played every team on its schedule tight, save for a season-opening 41-6 loss at national No. 1 Bradenton Manatee. South Plantation has gone from 4-6 to 7-4 to 9-1, so things are looking up, though a 21-14 loss at Deerfield Beach in Week 9 was a bit of a head-scratcher.

vs
MIRAMAR
SOUTH PLANTATION
Prediction: MIRAMAR

Deerfield Beach at Cypress Bay The Skinny: In juniors Aeron McNeal and Brandon Powell, the Bucks boast two running backs who have combined for nearly 2,000 yards this season. They will go head-up against a Lightning defense that hasn't allowed more than 17 points in a game since Oct. 12. These two faced off in the season-opener with Cypress Bay picking up a 29-6 road win.
vs
DEERFIELD BEACH
CYPRESS BAY
Prediction: CYPRESS BAY

Christopher Columbus 49 Dr. Krop 9. The Skinny: No Daryl Chestnut - no problem for the Columbus Explorers who jumped to a 42-3 halftime lead and played with a running clock in the second half. Lorenzo Woodley filled in very well in the running game. The Explorers dominated from start to finish
vs
COLUMBUS 49
DR. KROP 9

Coral Gables 20 North Miami Beach 14 The Skinny: NMB jumped to a 14-0 lead and looked in control at the half, but the Cavaliers scored once in the third and twice in the fourth to rally. Coral Gables dominated the fourth quarter in both time of possession and scoring. The Cavaliers advance to face off with district rival Columbus next week.
vs
CORAL GABLES - 20
NORTH MIAMI BEACH 14

Miami Killian at Southwest Miami

The Skinny: Quietly, Killian has had a very strong season. The only blemish on its record was a 23-21 loss to South Dade early in the season. And the Cougars are coming off a 21-17 victory at Columbus, which already has advanced to the second round. Not to be outdone, Southwest Miami also has just one loss this year (21-14 to South Miami on Oct. 20). The Eagles enter the playoffs having won three straight. This could end up one of the best games of the week.

vs
MIAMI KILLIAN
SOUTHWEST MIAMI
Prediction: Killian

Varela at South Dade The Skinny: Unfortunately for Varela, this one has the look of a game that could get ugly. The Vipers (4-5) were defeated 46-0 by South Dade in Week One. The Buccaneers (9-1) lost by a touchdown the next Friday against Dr. Krop but have won seven straight since then. South Dade has not allowed more than 21 points in a game all season.
vs
VARELA
SOUTH DADE
Prediction: SOUTH DADE
