Breaking down 6A south

SOCIAL: Follow on Twitter | Friend on Facebook

Miami Central obviously is the media favorite to win 6A south - but there are some great games in round one.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing games is Island Coast at Naples. Both potent offenses and both ready to claim a shot.

Then there's Winter Haven at New Smyrna Beach - or Mainland at Lake Gibson ... the list goes on and on.

Untitled Document
Winter Haven at New Smyrna

The Skinny:The Winter Haven Blue Devils are riding a five game winning streak and are averaging no less than 22 points a game. Their only loss on the season came to Lake Gibson costing them a district title. NSB has put in some quality wins this season including Deland and Mainland but this will be their toughest test to date. Winter Haven's RB Austin Lane is a load and the key to the Blue Devil's offense, expect a big game from the Florida commitment. New Smyrna will be seriously tested in this one - can the 'Cudas survive?

vs
WINTER HAVEN
NEW SMYRNA BEACH
Prediction: WINTER HAVEN

Mainland at Lake Gibson The Skinny: A matchup of two seasoned playoff teams, Mainland has now made the playoffs a staggering 19 straight years while Lake Gibson has made it 12 of the last 18 including three straight appearances. Lake Gibson has come close and many believe this could be the Braves' year to run the table, but getting past Mainland will be no easy task. The Buc's tough regular season schedule will have them ready for this matchup. This will be a treat for defensive minded people out there with Mainland's Quinton Powell and Lake Gibson's DL bookends Anthony Green and Kennard Swanson lacing it up.
vs
MAINLAND
LAKE GIBSON
Prediction: LAKE GIBSON

Barron Collier at South Fort Myers

The Skinny: The triple-option offense means mean's only one thing, a lot of running. Throw in a talented defense and that's how the Cougars have got things done this season. That being said, the Wolfback score and score a lot in part to ATH Jayron Kearse and should pull this one out. Barron Collier will keep it close, but too many weapons.

vs
BARRON COLLIER
SOUTH FORT MYERS
Prediction: SOUTH FORT MYERS

Island Coast at Naples The Skinny: If you are looking for a game filled with future college athletes than look no further. Island Coast has some of the best talent round including QB Kurt Benkert, but Naples may have the more complete team. If Island Coast wants to pull off the win it will take a complete game by Benkert and that's a big if. No one is giving Naples the respect the Golden Eagles deserve - we will.
vs
ISLAND COAST
NAPLES
Prediction: NAPLES

South Fork at Palm Bay The Skinny: On paper South Fork looks like the better team given its 9-1 record, but several of its wins came against some inferior opponents and the defense is suspect giving up 54 points to 2A Glades Days last week. Palm Bay is battle tested and despite its four losses, it could be that difficult regular season schedule that helps them advance.
vs
SOUTH FORK
PALM BAY
Prediction: PALM BAY

Heritage at Sebastian River The Skinny: Sebastian River won its district title in the schools brief 19 year history and will now face a tough Heritage squad. Sebastian River has won some big games at home including South Fork while Heritage saw a perfect season and district slip away from them dropping to Palm Bay, 7-6. Heritage would love nothing more than a chance at Palm Bay again.
vs
HERITAGE
SEBASTIAN RIVER
Prediction: HERITAGE

Miami Northwestern at Hollywood Hills

The Skinny: It's always surprising to see powerhouse Northwestern not make the playoffs, but that's exactly what happened last season. The Bulls are back and have done on the defensive side of the ball. The Spartans have been less than impressive this season and don't stand much of a chance. Keep your eye on Artie Burns

vs
NORTHWESTERN
HOLLYWOOD HILLS
Prediction: NORTHWESTERN

Archbishop McCarthy at Miami Central The Skinny: : State runner up, Miami Central is looking to make a return trip to Orlando with its only two losses of the season coming against Grayson (GA) and Manatee. The Rockets defense is loaded including one of the best secondaries in the state that include DB's Ahmad Thomas and Da'Wan Hunte. Not to mention a backfield that includes Dalvin Cook and Joseph Yearby The Rockets will launch off and set-up a potential huge second round matchup with Northwestern.
vs
ARCHBISHOP MCCARTHY
MIAMI CENTRAL
Prediction: MIAMI CENTRAL
