Breaking down 7A south - it's not just Manatee

SOCIAL: Follow on Twitter | Friend on Facebook

Before you hand out the trophy to Manatee - the defending 7A champion - let's take a look at who else is making the dance.

  • Fort Pierce Central: - The Cobras are unbeaten and gave Manatee fits last year at Hawkins Stadium. This year if both teams win - the game would be in Fort Pierce.

  • St. Thomas Aquinas: - The Raiders fell to Dwyer 6-3 last year and this year have an 8-2 record. Something tells me this is a team you may not want to see on the other side of the sidelines during the post-season.

  • Atlantic: The Eagles started the season with a 29-0 loss to American Heritage-Delray and stumbled against Santaluces but have been lights out since, scoring no less than 28 and shutting out three of their last six opponents.

  • Dwyer: The Panthers face life on the road after falling to Atlantic, but still have the firepower to contend for the title.

So - in theory - it's still anyone's game. And of course, a few years ago, St. Thomas Aquinas was marching towards a mythical national title and fell to Manatee.

So anything can happen in the cold nights of late November and early December.

    Venice at Pinellas Park

The Skinny: Venice went on the road and knocked off Countryside in the first round last season before bowing out to district rival Manatee in the second round. With a demanding regular season schedule that featured Naples, Palmetto, Manatee, Charlotte, Chaminade-Madonna , the Indians shouldn't have any problem getting past the Patriots program seeking its first playoff win since 1997

    vs
    VENICE
    PINELLAS PARK
    Prediction: VENICE

Northeast (St. Pete) at Manatee The Skinny: It's been 11 years since the Northeast Vikings last walked off the field with a playoff win, look for that streak to reach an even dozen now. Top ranked Manatee led byMississippi State-bound Cord Sandberg, has its sights not only winning its sixth state title but the programs first ever national title.
    vs
    NORTHEAST
    MANATEE
    Prediction: MANATEE

    Martin County at Charlotte

The Skinny: No introductions needed here as Martin County stunned Charlotte at home 14-10 with a score in the final 19 seconds to earn their first playoff win since 1991. Both teams survived district tiebreakers to earn playoff bids, the Tigers fifth overall, while the Tarpons locked up their 19th appearance.

    vs
    MARTIN COUNTY
    CHARLOTTE
    Prediction: CJHARLOTTE

Lemon Bay at Fort Pierce Central The Skinny: The Manta Rays are in the playoffs for the seventh time in school history, first time since 2003, unfortunately it figures to be not a long stay. The Cobras, led by Marcus Levy, are making their fourth straight playoff appearance and were a win away from making the Final Four last season before falling 13-10 to state champion Manatee.
    vs
    LEMON BAY
    FORT PIERCE CENTRAL
    Prediction: FORT PIERCE CENTRAL

Boyd Anderson at Atlantic (Delray) The Skinny: The Cobras have a tough task of traveling to an Atlantic team, who upset Dwyer 28-12. Both teams have been battle tested throughout the regular season with games against Miramar, Cypress Bay, American Heritage, Northeast and Dillard. Atlantic is led by Keith Bryant and Brisly Estime - a two-way player. Cobra QB Gregory Hankerson will be tested tonight.
    vs
    BOYD ANDERSON
    ATLANTIC COMMUNITY
    Prediction: ATLANTIC COMMUNITY

Dwyer at Northeast (Oakland Park) The Skinny: A loss to Atlantic may be the wakeup call Dwyer needed for another long playoff run. Northeast has a solid defense that will keep it in the game but the Panthers have too many weapons to contain in this one. Dwyer, however, has had quarterback issues of late and has made a change. Best matchup will feature Northeast's Stacy Coley going up against Dwyer's Johnnie Dixon.
    vs
    DWYER
    NORTHEAST
    Prediction: DWYER

Miami Beach at St. Thomas Aquinas

The Skinny: After graduation a huge class, Miami Beach did a great job getting into the playoffs again, but the party is over tonight traveling to Brian Piccolo Stadium and taking on state power Aquinas. Fred Coppet, John O'Korn and company have too many weapons for the Hi-Tides.

    vs
    MIAMI BEACH
    ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
    Prediction: ST. THOMAS AQUINAS

Plantation 29 American 8 The Skinny: : The Colonels jumped out in the second quarter after a scoreless first and never looked back. Plantation RB Jovante Ham led the rushing attack for the Colonels that racked up 261 yards on the ground.
    vs
    PLANTATION 29
    AMERICAN 8
