Three teams leave the race early

Three teams will be leaving the FlaVarsity Top 25 after losing first-round playoff games, including two unbeatens.

It was a wild and wacky first week of post-season, and like most - we had some first-round upsets.

None bigger, however, than First Coast's meltdown against 5-5 Buchholz.

The Buccaneers entered with a national ranking, a perfect 10-0 record and home field advantage against a Bobcat team that was giving up an average of 27 points a game. First Coast did its best Florida Gator offense impression and completely disappeared from the 7A playoff picture - falling in overtime.

Largo lost a gut-wrenching 10-6 game with Armwood. The Packer fans felt this was the year for the blue and gold to make some noise - but Armwood's defense did what it had to do to advance. The Hawks (8-3) will advance to face Hillsborough.

American Heritage-Plantation, picked by many to be the 5A south representative, was blown out by Miami Jackson 39-23 in a game that wasn't even that close.

As usual, No. 1 Manatee scored at will against the Vikings of Northeast (St. Pete) and will face off with district rival Venice. Booker T. Washington also won big - 71-0 - over North Broward Prep.

No. 3 and No. 4 are on a collison course and both teams dispatched of their respective district runner-up rivals. American Heritage-Delray advanced with a 30-13 win over Chaminade Madonna Prep while University School shut out Cardinal Newman.

Which brings us to the much-anticipated matchup of the year - U-School and AHD. Get your tickets early folks.
