8A Preview - All eight games

SOCIAL: Follow on Twitter | Friend on Facebook

The Class 8A finals will be the final event of the two-weekend festival in Orlando, so we thought we'd get the 8A up and running first as we prepare to give thanks.

There are some interesting match-ups in 8A - none more significant than No. 6 Dr. Phillips hosting No. 8 Plant.

All four teams in Region 1 are runner-ups - and since regions 1 and 3 are home in the semi-finals, one may have to play a lot of road games - but get perhaps the biggest game of all at home.

In the south bracket, three of the four games are district rematches.

FlaVarsity went a not-too-bad 13-3 last week in predicting the winners -so here goes this week's prognostications. Untitled Document
Fletcher (10-1) at Seminole (7-4)

The Skinny: The Senators continue to be road warriors, winning four of the last five playoff games - all played on the road. Fletcher advances after a 24-21 win over Lake Brantley while Seminole downed Deland 26-12. The Senators had a hard time handling Deland's 'Wildcat' attack with JoJo Kemp - so look for Seminole to utilize the talented athletes they have to spread the field. PLAYERS TO WATCH: FLETCHER: RB Jamari Smith, QB Evan Orth. SEMINOLE: ATH Ronnie Moore, ATH Jerlarius Watkins.

Prediction: FLETCHER

Timber Creek(11-1) at Apopka(9-2) The Skinny:The Blue Darters started the season a little slow with losses to Dr. Phillips and Olympia early, but have been very impressive down the stretch. Timber Creek, by the same token - has scored 31 or more points in all but two of its games - with a 1-1 record in those two. Last year the Blue Darters fell in the first round to the Wolves 20-0 in the first round of the post-season. PLAYERS TO WATCH: APOPKA QB Zack Darlington, TE Trey Hendrickson; TIMBER CREEK: DB Keith White, RB Jacques Patrick
Prediction: APOPKA

Plant (10-1) at Dr. Phillips(11-0) The Skinny: One of the best matchups in the post-season and a shame that it comes so early. Both teams have proven playoff experience and a storied history. Dr. Phillips has played through not having various star players throughout the season while Plant lost one of its best when Richy Klepal decided to quit playing rather than face the risk of another concussion. Both have been tested in their own right and if you flipped a coin - it'd land on its side. There are a ton of colleges represented at this game and the list of players is too long to list. Here's two from each side.PLAYERS TO WATCH: PLANT - RB Wesley Bullock, DB Paris Bostick; DR PHILLIPS - DB Marcell Harris, QB Alton Meeks.
Prediction: DR PHILLIPS

Vero Beach (9-1) at East Lake (10-1)

The Skinny: East Lake made it all the way to the state quarter finals last year before falling to Plant. The playoff trip started with a win over Vero Beach. The Eagles are led by QB Pete Dinovo and have won all but two games on the field (a loss to Largo and a forfeit win over Countryside). Vero comes in 9-1 with only a four-point loss to No. 10 Fort Pierce Central. Both teams deserved to be ranked but both play in the shadow of other area programs that grab the spotlight. One of them gets a bright light shined on the future with a win. PLAYERS TO WATCH: VERO BEACH DB Sean Paul, DB Dravious Wright; EAST LAKE QB Pete Dinovo, OL Shane Fagan.

Prediction: EAST LAKE

Palm Beach Central (8-2) at Seminole Ridge (7-2) The Skinny: Biggest game in Palm Beach County this week - or so we've been told. Two relatively new schools looking to establish themselves as the control center of 8A football. The game that was supposed to start the season but was cancelled due to a storm. Ridge comes in with a 7-2 mark, having won the last seven after an 0-2 start. Central comes in at 8-2. Both teams avenged an earlier loss in the season with first-round playoff wins. PLAYERS TO WATCH: PALM BEACH CENTRAL ATH Lloyd Howard, RB Ray Wilson; SEMINOLE RIDGE: RB Elie Turene, DT Kyle Shortridge.

Miramar (6-4)at Cypress Bay (9-2) The Skinny: Someone opened the door and let the Miramar Patriots fight their way into the post-season. Many wrote off the Patriots after graduation took sixteen starters to collegiate ranks last year. But they play the game on the gridiron - not on paper. Cypress Bay beat Miramar when the Patriots made mental mistakes late and the Lightning made them pay. This time Miramar will be focused and determined - but so with Mark Guandolo's group. If the Lightning want to take that step into the elite category in 8A - this is the game they must win. This game - like the Plant-Dr. Phillips match - is a toss-up. PLAYERS TO WATCH: MIRAMAR LB Jermaine Grace, WR Sean Avant; CYPRESS BAY RB Matt Dayes, WR Alex Montgomery
Prediction: CYPRESS BAY

Coral Gables (4-7) at Christopher Columbus (7-4)

The Skinny: Coral Gables rallied from 14 points down to knock out North Miami Beach and advance to face Columbus again. The Explorers exploded on Dr. Krop - winning 49-9. The last time these two played -it wasn't pretty and it wasn't close - with Columbus winning 41-0 just four weeks ago. Not much has changed. The Explorers are itching to prove a pre-season top 10 ranking was merited - but will need to get the early lead on the Cavaliers and focus. The game starts at 1 PM so get there early. PLAYERS TO WATCH:CORAL GABLESWR Robert Torrence, LB Roberto Zaldivar; COLUMBUS: ATH Lorenzo Woodley, ATH Jesus Wilson

Prediction: COLUMBUS

Miami Killian (9-1) at South Dade (8-1) The Skinny: : Another one of our 'rematch' district battles. We have three of them in the south brackets. Killian lost to South Dade earlier this year 23-21 so it's anyone's game. The Cougars have run off five straight wins since the defeat. The Bucs come in riding an eight game winning streak. Both looked good in regional quarterfinal wins. it's anyone's game as we said earlier. PLAYERS TO WATCH: KILLIAN LB Jordan Gibbs, DB Damonte Dent; SOUTH DADE RB William Cortes, DE Tremaine Brock
