Week 2 Learning Points in Class 8A

SOCIAL: Follow on Twitter | Friend on Facebook

Three things I learned in last Friday's FHSAA Class 8A regional semifinals:

  • 1. Killian and Columbus are playing hellacious defense of late.

The Cougars have opened the playoffs allowing a total of seven points to Miami Southwest and South Dade.

Meanwhile, the Explorers have allowed a combined 16 points in four-of-their-last-five games. The odd game out there? A 21-17 loss to Killian on Nov. 7.

This week's rematch should be a good one.

  • 2. Speaking of defense, Dr. Phillips was dominant against defending champion Tampa Plant.

The host Panthers allowed just 72 yards of offense and sacked PHS quarterback Aaron Banks seven times.

Just a tremendous turnaround for a team that allowed 49 points to Plant in the second round of last year's playoffs.

  • 3. How about some offensive love...

So far in the postseason, Apopka is averaging 50.5 ppg, Columbus 45.5, Weston Cypress Bay 37.5, Killian 34.5, Loxahatchee Seminole Ridge 33 and Tarpon Springs East Lake 30. Dr. Phillips and Neptune Beach Fletcher are putting up 26 ppg apiece.

Once teams run into stronger defenses, scoring generally drops. But this has been a fun start.
