Lessons learned from Week 2 in 7A
Three things I learned in last Friday's FHSAA Class 7A regional semifinals:
The Lions have opened the playoffs with back-to-back overtime victories. OHS took out Leesburg, 34-31, in Round One and Orlando Evans, 20-19, last Friday.
Oviedo has proven to be exceptionally tough in close games, also owning a 30-27 victory against Sanford Seminole, a 20-19 defeat of Orlando Edgewater and a 16-14 victory against Oak Ridge in the regular season.
Powerful Tallahassee Lincoln is up next.
The Cobras have scored just 19 points in two playoff games combined. No matter. They've allowed only nine.
Now, one week after upending Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer, BA's traditional power tour continues with a trip to Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas.
This one should provide a stern test for the Cobras' stout defense. The Raiders haven't put up fewer than 38 points in their last four games.
The Cobras have won their first two playoff games by scores of 41-13 and 40-14 with Cincinnati commitment Marcus Levy picking up three scores in each contest. That said, they did come about their victories against Englewood Lemon Bay and Stuart Martin County in different ways.
Central actually came back from a 13-7 halftime deficit to defeat LBHS. However, the Cobras jumped out quickly on MCHS, rolling to a 20-7 lead after two quarters.
Up next is national No. 1 Bradenton Manatee.
