Spring Spotlight: Miami Central

The Miami Central Rockets cruised to a 6A state championship in 2013. After losing an early season dream matchup against Booker T Washington, the Rockets never looked back.

Central is losing a whopping eight division one football players - most notably Joseph Yearby (Miami), Dalvin Cook (FSU), and Trevor Darling (Miami). For the 2015 class, it looks like Central will send at least six football players to division one colleges. The Rockets aren't rebuilding, but just reloading.

With spring football in full gear, FlaVarsity.com caught up with Miami Central assistant coach Gerald Cox to put the spotlight on the Rockets.

"Spring football is a needed asset in the success of our program," said Cox. "Over the years we have approached spring in search of new or old players that will be able to contribute to our brand of football for the upcoming season."

There are five prospects that Cox believes will make a big impact at Central this fall. Cedrick Miller is a physical, yet speedy back who will carry the rock in replacement of Yearby and Cook, and offensive lineman Robzel Sylvester will open up holes for his back to run through.

Wide receiver Lynwood Joyner is an excellent route runner with great hands, according to coach Cox, and will look to have a breakout campaign as defensives eye on Da'Vante Phillips.

Defensive end Tamerick Simpson and cornerback Adam Mattison are two young players to watch on the defensive side of the ball.

Rivals100 wide receiver Da'Vante Phillips is arguably the best player on the Rockets and will be the focal point of the Rockets' passing game. Cornerback Calvin Brewton is a Florida State commit that "loves to compete against the best," Cox says.

After winning the 6A state title in a blowout win over Armwood, the expectations with all of these star players is high.

"Going into the 2014 season our expectations are to compete in every game, stay healthy and get better as the season goes on and try to match the standard of our program and that's winning championships."
