2019 Godby safety Cortez Andrews has football in his blood

Cortez Andrews comes from a long line of power five football players. His father, Carlos Andrews was a star at Godby and ended up playing safety for Alabama from 2002-2005. His father's older brother, Dennis Andrew, played fullback for Florida State under Bobby Bowden in the mid-90's. His cousin, Dennis Andrews Jr., played "A Back" for Georgia Tech from 2012-2014. He also had an uncle, Del Roberts, who played for North Carolina in 2004 before transffering to Southern University in 2005 graduating in 2008. Football is in his blood.

While only a sophomore, Andrews holds offers from Southern Mississippi, Eastern Carolina, University of Alabama-Birmingham, Central Florida, and Kent State. He also told FlaVarsity he is in communication with Notre Dame and Florida State. His dream school is Alabama, not surprising considered his father played for the Tide, but says he is grateful for all of his offers and doesn't take his blessings for granted.

A yes sir, no sir kid, Andrews comes off mature for his age when you speak to him about adversity he has faced. His high school team, Godby, had a disappointing season in 2016. The Cougars finished 2-7 and will have a new coach at the helm in 2017. Some rumors have surfaced that former FSU star and Cincinnati Bengals Pro-Bowler Corey Fuller is one of the candidates for the job. Andrews said that none of that was in his control and reflected on a tough season.

"I learned from this tough season that despite the the losses you have to remain mentally tough or you'll beat yourself up," remarked Andrews.

Andrews grew up playing basketball, track and field, as well as baseball but his main sport has always been football. As a student of his craft, he knows that change is inevitable and acknowledged that he may have to learn a new position on the gridiron in the future.

"As of now, I plan on sticking with safety in college but I always hear that if I get much bigger I'll have to change to linebacker," conceded Andrews.

Andrews is a smart player that doesn't make false steps in pass coverage and shows a knack for taking good angles to the ball carrier. He's a wrap up tackler who seeks out contact and if he adds some more weight to his frame he could play Sam, Mike, or Will depending on the extent of his growth.

As a sophomore he has already proven he has the physical tools to compete at the next level and he has the mindset and work ethic to take his play to the next level. This offseason he will hone his skills in 7-on-7 tournaments with coach Harrison Smith's team. He also has plans to attend spring and summer camps at Alabama, FSU, and LSU and intends to camp at Notre Dame but hasn't worked out the details yet.

Cortez Andrews, remember the name, he's one to watch this summer and should add a few more options to his college plans in the near future.
