6A State Championship: Norland Wins Thriller
TALLAHASSEE – Miami Norland watched their first ever appearance in a state football championship game slip away....and then the Vikings pulled off a miraculous 61-yard touchdown in the closing seconds to emerge a 19-14 winner over Orlando Edgewater in the 6A title game at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Faced with a fourth down, quarterback Robert Spence looked off his two favorite targets -- Willie Pope and Dwayne Bowe -- senior Sean Bailey down the center of the field for the game-clinching score with 23 seconds left.
Bailey, who had never scored a touchdown, beat Edgewater safety Kenny Ingram with a dive into the end zone, securing the Vikings' first state football championship.
Edgewater, which came back to take a 14-13 lead with 48 seconds to play, had its final chance end in disaster when Norland linebacker Antwan Barnes stripped Eagles quarterback Derrick Schirm at the Edgewater 36. Barnes recovered the ball at the 28 with 12 seconds left.
The Eagles got on the board first with 7:05 left in the first quarter when Mike Walker took an 16-yard pass from Schirm and a 7-0 lead.
The Vikings evened the game up at 7 with 1:38 left in the quarter when Omar Meza returned his third interception of the year for a score. This one was 71 yards and it came with 1:38 left.
The Vikings used a blocked punt by Meza. Then, from the one, Spence kept it for a 13-7 advantage with :56 left in the third quarter.
Norland coach Nigel Dunn, who broke with his usual routine and coached the entire game from the press box, called the play that will forever go down in Norland history.
''It's called Chief,'' said Dunn, who has been fighting a cold but didn't seem to mind that he had just been soaked with water by his players in the freezing 30-degree temperatures late Saturday night. ``We had called the play four times before. But they kept double-covering Bowe and Pope.
