Steve Berrey, Publisher
Steve has been the publisher for FlaVarsity since October of 2010. Known around the state of Florida as 'Mr. High School, Steve brings 22 years of covering high school football and sports to the team.
Steve has been covering Florida high school sports since relocating back to Jacksonville in 1989. Steve started covering high school sports for the Jacksonville (Fla.)Journal and Florida Times-Union in 1977 while a 9th grader at Landon Jr. High. He worked for the Clayton (Ga.) News Daily in Jonesboro, Ga. and then became the Sports Editor of the Fayetteville (Ga.) Neighbor in 1982. In 1983, he became assistant Sports Editor of the Warner Robins (Ga.)Daily Sun. He began a full-time radio broadcast career in 1984 at WMVG in Milledgeville, Ga., where he was attending college at Georgia College (and State University).
Upon returning to Florida in 1989, he began covering local Jacksonville high school sports for various radio stations and in 1990 began a 21-year career as the 'voice of high school football' through the 'scoreboard show'. Covering games from 'the Keys to Gulf Breeze and all points in-between' he became known as the voice of high school football in 1991, calling, producing or attending every state football championship game until 2009.
He is a native of Jacksonville, having attended Sandalwood High School, and over the years has built a solid relationship with coaches, players, parents and fans throughout the state.
His main priority are the student athletes in the state of Florida. It makes no difference what part of the state they are from, what team they play on or what colleges they are are interested in. is and will always be focused on the kids and letting the country know all about the talented crop of players we have here in the Sunshine State.
