Booker T edges Miami Central, U-School for top spot

Miami Washington, led by Dairy Farmer's Coach of the Year Tim "Ice" Harris, has been tabbed as the top team in the state of Florida.
The Tornados finished on top of the last round of voting for the FlaVarsity Top 25 - picking up four first place votes and 333 total points.
The 13-1 Class 4A champions edged Miami Central (the 6A champ and the only team to beat Washington) by five points. University School finished third.
Washington spent a majority of the season in the top five - climbing as high as Number 2 twice.
It is the first Top 25 trophy won by Miami Washington - which joins Miami Northwestern (1998, 2006 and 2007) and Miami Carol City (1997) representing Miami Dade County as the best football program in the state.
Washington lost the second game of the season to the Rockets, but ripped off 12 straight wins after that - with no game coming within 17 points of the Tornados.
Led by Jr. QB Treon Harris and sr. LB Matthew Thomas, Washington marched through the post-season averaging 50 points per contest - while giving up an average of five points.
"I appreciate the honor for the kids," said Tim Harris. "We work hard to develop these kids to reach a plateau and this is it."
"We feel like we have developed a lot of young kids and we have a system. We work on the student athlete," Harris continued. "We put them in a position to play young and that is what builds our depth."
Miami Washington played one game this season where the starters were in the game in the fourth quarter - according to Harris.
"I really feel like Unviersity School and Miami Central both are great programs, great teams," Harris stated. "Central played an amazing schedule. I'm just blessed that the voters see what we're doing here and have put us in that position. We feel we can honor that position. We fell less than 24 minutes away from possibly being the number one team in the country."
Miami Washington led Miami Central in the third quarter before the Rockets rallied and won 36-27. It was the second loss for Booker T. Washington in three games, dating back to the 2011 state finals against Jacksonville Bolles.
"From that point our kids were focused on one thing," Harris said. "Winning out."
