BRANDON MAKES ITS CLAIM AS THE TEAM TO BEAT
FLORIDAKIDS.NET WRESTLING RANKINGS 01/04/2002
By John Lawton, wrestling editor, FloridaKids.net
Brandon staked their claim as the team to beat in the state of Florida as they went both north and south and took on the top teams and clubs and demonstrated out on the mat why they should remain as #1 in the FloridaKids.Net Top 25 Rankings. Brandon went north and topped #2 University Christian, #7 Manatee and # 25 Tallahassee Lincoln in the Capital City Classic in Tallahassee. Last weekend, the Brandon Wrestling Club went south and took on "all comers" in USA Wrestling's Sunshine Open and won that tourney handily too. This Saturday, Brandon will host its own USA Wrestling tourney.
In major action these past two weekends, Cardinal Gibbons went on the road to defeat a big field up in at the Rebel Invitational in Duncan, South Carolina, St. Thomas Aquinas won the Palm Beach Christmas Classic at Santaluces, Miami Southridge won the Sarasota Christmas Classic, Venice won the Captain Archer at Charlotte, Clay won the Westside Kiwanis in Jacksonville, Oviedo won the Bill Scott Memorial at Lyman, Palm Bay took the "B" Division of the KSA Duals in Orlando, Fort Pierce Central won the Big Lake in Okeechobee, Springstead won the Kiwanis in Hernando, Bloomingdale won the Royal Knights Duals at River Ridge, Tarpon Springs won the Southside Duals at Boca Ciega, Spanish river won the Suncoast Invitational, Wellington, Hallandale and Key West won their Divisions at the Boca Raton, St. Cloud won their Rotary Duals, Melbourne won the Kowboy Kup 6 at Osceola in Kissimmee, Tampa Riverview won the Raider Invitational in Plant City and Archbishop Curley won the Patriots Invitational in Miami..
Whew, I'm running out of dimes keeping track of these guys. Also, going on road trips out of state were Dr Krop to Chattanooga, Tennessee, Oviedo up to Athens, Georgia and Pensacola Christian to Alabama. Finally, teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, New York, Texas, California, Tennessee and Washington DC came down to Disney to compete against some of Florida's top teams in the KSA Duals.
The biggest event on this weekend's schedule should be either the Mandarin in Jacksonville with Top 25ers University Christian, Edgewater, Oviedo and Tallahassee Lincoln or the Jay Steadwell Classic in Port St Lucie with Top 25ers Clay, Fort Pierce Central, Palm Bay and South Dade.
Other important tourneys include the Harrington Mat Classic at Gateway in Kissimmee, the Hendry County in Clewiston, the Middleburg Invitational, plus dual tourneys at Zephyrhills, Dr Krop in Miami, Lakeland, St. Cloud and at Temple Heights Christian School.
Over the past two weeks, Brandon was so impressive in winning that both Intermat (from 25 to 23) and Amateur Wrestling News (from 39 to 34) moved them higher in their national rankings. Individuals winning from Brandon at the Capital City were Cesar Grajales, Khalid Andwele, Ryan Joyce, Tom Hutchinson, Rocky Cozart and Matt Juncal. Winning titles at the Sunshine Open were Cesar, Khalid, Tom, Rocky and Matt again. Other top placers for Brandon in these events were Alejandro Figueroa, Eddie Hutchinson, Brian Barsoumian, Rashad Goff and Keith Simmons.
Still looking tough in #2 spot in the rankings is University Christian from Jacksonville. Dave Galyan's team finished a strong 2nd to Brandon in the Capital City Classic. Leading the way for the Christians were
Chris Cantillo (130), Jonathan Baldree (145) and Shane Witter (215) as they won titles.
Staking a claim to #3 is Countryside of Clearwater. David Frayer's Cougars took an extended holiday as they had their talented alumni in for a nice Mat Clinic on December 22.
Knocking on the door to the highest rankings at #4 is Cardinal Gibbons. Two weeks ago, Frank Pettineo's Chiefs went up to South Carolina and won the Rebel Invitational over a field that included SC's 3rd ranked team Byrnes. Winning titles for the Redskins were Jorge Badia (103), Greg Soufleris (119), JT Taylor (130), Charles Yearby (152), Sam Dorvile (189), David Spanich (215) and Leon Harrington (275).
Keeping the heat on the top 4 at #5 is St. Thomas Aquinas. The Raiders won their 2nd tourney in as many weeks as they won the Palm Beach Christmas Classic at Santaluces over Palm Bay, South Dade and Wellington. Taking individual crowns for Coach Frank Patacsil were Guy Gibbon (119), Jon Wimberley (152) and Oscar Rodriguez (171).
Moving up to #6 is Miami Southridge. Coach Jim Husk's Spartans also are moving up into the top spot in the Class 3A rankings based on their impressive win at the Sarasota Christmas Classic over Lincoln, Bayshore, Fort Myers, Braddock, Durant and a half dozen more solid teams in the annual Jonesfest. Spartans winning individual titles were Duprey (119), Manny Sevilla (125) and Carlos West at 189. West won an individual title at the Sunshine Open and is nationally ranked at #16 among the Class of 2002.
Slipping just a notch down to #7 is Manatee. Andy "Coach Gug's" Gugliemini's Canes came in a credible 3rd behind Brandon and University Christian at the Capital City. But they getting another shot at the Eagles when they visit Brandon in late January for the Ippolito Tourney. Winning a title at the Capital City as well as the Outstanding Wrestler Award for Middle Weights was Trevor Fair (152). Bobby Latessa also won the 125 pound title at the Sunshine Open last week.
Jumping up quite a bit to #8 is Venice. Coach Dan Kelly's won well-respected Captain Archer tourney with a balanced effort as they put seven wrestlers in the finals. Winning championships were Levi Duyn (130), Bryan Little (140) and Matt Brandow (275). Taking 2nds were David Rossheim (103), Derek Brunette (112), Jacob Matey (119) and Adrian Bull (215).
Jumping into the Top 25 at 9 is University of Orlando. Where did they come from? Well Randy Jessee's team has been quietly building up a pretty decent record despite losing two of its top wrestlers to a new school plus they managed to get the Orlando Sentinel's top spot in their Super 6 ranking. University also managed to defeat St Cloud in the KSA Duals, so they will be in the Top 25 probably thru the end of the season if they keep things going.
At #10 is Clay. Coach Jim Reape's guys won the Westside Kiwanis going away over Ridgeview, Middleburg and 13 others. Winning titles for the Blue Devils were Danny Mills (135), Michael Segretto (145) and William Kendrick (152). Taking 2nds were Spencer Canff (103) and Eddie Piner (119).
Hanging around the Top 25 at #11 is Bishop Moore of Orlando. I haven't heard anything on this team since they won tourneys in the first two weeks so I hope to get some info on Coach Dave Manchon's Hornets soon or they will be moved down further in the rankings.
Dropping a little to #12 is St Cloud. Coach Victor Lorenzano's Bulldogs had moved to 11-0 after a 5-0 day while dominating the St. Cloud Rotary Duals. Sam Nelsen (103), Jon Rodriguez(119), Justin Fournier(135), Travis Maughan (140) and Clark Chesnut(171) all captured individual titles. Fournier was selected as the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler for the second time in his career. Sam Nelsen ended his day with 5 pins and looks to be a standout at 103. Fournier, Maughan and Chesnut all stand at 15-0. After the KSA Duals, St Cloud was at 15-2 as they defeated Flagler and Lyman but lost to "competitive" division champion Pennsbury, PA and a tight one to University 29-34.
Remaining at #13 is Naples. I got a first hand look at Coach Cory Kness's squad at the Captain Archer where they finished a strong 2nd behind Venice. Winning titles for the Golden Eagles were Danny Toledo (103) and Mario Ashley (125). Taking 2nds were Johnny Lincourt (135) and John Inskip (152).
Moving up a notch to #14 is Edgewater. Coach John Hauser's defeated Oviedo in a head-to-head dual for the second time this season and those wins out-weigh their 5th place finish in the Bill Scott Memorial at Lyman. Tanner was the lone champion in the Lyman but taking 4ths were Sutton (125), Brockett (140),
Cartagena (160) and Barrett (171).
Moving up to # 15 is Oviedo. Coach (Field General) Tom Coffman's troops took to the battlefield two weekends ago at the Lyman/Bill Scott Memorial Christmas tourney. His young army kept the opposition at bay early on with small suppressive fires, but for the finals, the General called in the heavy artillery, blasting through four of four matches to clinch the team championship. Winning titles were Seve Hewitt (103), Jason Robbins (112 - he was also OW), Justin Fraga (119) and Zak Jarzynka (130). The Lions roamed up to Athens Georgia last week where they took a respectable 9th out of 22 teams from five different states. Jason Robbins was the lone champion at 112 and he was also voted the outstanding lightweight. Also placing were Justin Fraga (3rd), Kyle Coffman (3rd @ 125) and Jarzynka (6th).
Moving up to #16 is Palm Bay. Coach Sean Ballard's Pirates went 7-0 and won their division at the KSA Disney Duals. They also took a solid 2nd at the Santaluces ahead of South Dade and Wellington. Taking 2nd at Santaluces were David McMIller (119), Arnie Pugh (125), Jay Pugh (130) and Danny Badcock.
Dropping a few spots to #17 is Miami Palmetto. Coach Dave Soderholm took a good 2nd place at the Lyman tourney as they edged out Flagler and University. Winning an individual title for the Panthers was John Rost (135); taking 2nds was Ferman (145) and Roberto Lam (275).
Also dropping a couple of spots down at #18 is Flagler Palm Coast. Coach Steve DeAugustino's Bulldogs took a good 4th place in the Lyman but also defeated University in the Disney Duals so their position will probably change a few more times over the next month. Winning a title at Lyman was Zack Tomlinson (189) taking 2nd were Derek McKay (125), David Bossardet (135) and Jay Silvola (215).
Dropping a bit down at #19 is Miami Braddock. Braddock finished 5th at the Sarasota just ahead of Durant and Lakewood Ranch. Winning individual titles for Coach Saul Tejada were Alan Ruiz (112) and Chris Rippel (135).
Rounding out the 2nd top ten at #20 again is Fort Pierce Central. Coach Peter Crespo's Cobras won the Big Lake over Sebring and Sebastian River two weekends ago. Winning individual titles were Craig Masters (112), Delrico Choates (119), Terry Morgan (125), Bobby Ledbetter (145), Clyde Mitchell (152) and Eddie Keyes (189).
Falling down to #21 is Dr. Krop. The Lightning under Eric Phillips took a respectable 8th out of 24 in the tough McCallie tourney up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Winning places were Eric Gomez, 2nd @ 152, Irvin Nelfort, 4th @ 171, Donald Hyde, 6th @ 145 and Garnett Feldman, 6th @ 130.
At #22 is South Dade. Coach Victor Balmeceda's Buccaneers took a solid 3rd at the Santaluces two weekends ago. Winning titles there were Robert Orta (140) and Daniel Perez (275). Perez also won a Sunshine Open title at 275 and is now nationally ranked at #11 among the Class of 2002 wrestlers at 275.
At #23 is Springstead. Coach Bob Levija's Eagles won the Kiwanis at Hernando over River Ridge and Crystal River. The Booker boys' Matt (145) and Nate (171) as well as Steve Garofano who dropped down again to 152 won individual titles. Matt also won a Sunshine Open title and is nationally ranked at #19 among the Class of 2002 wrestlers at 145.
Moving up a notch to #24 is Wellington. Coach Kevin Hebard's squad won the overall team championship at the Boca Raton Dual tourney. Sam Glucksman (112), Sean McAleney (130), Gordon DiBattisto (135), Nate Mendenhall (152) and David Pugliese (215) were individual medalists for Wellington.
Rounding out the Top 25 at #25 is Lincoln of Tallahassee. Coach Michael Crowder's Trojans took a good 2nd in the Sarasota tourney and a decent 4th in the Capital City Classic. Robbie Pryor (112) and Joe Sroka (160) took 2nds at the Capital City. Winning at Sarasota was Nathan Pierce (140) while Brooks Savage (152) and Joe Sroka (160) took 2nds.
