Four-star safety Brian Edwards keeping his options open, focused on Miramar

We spoke to Brian Edwards after Miramar's 47-0 victory over Plantation and the 4-star safety gave us a glimpse into his senior season at Miramar and an update on his recruitment.

The Miramar Patriots are 3-1 so far in 2016, with their only blemish coming against national power St. Thomas Aquinas. Their most impressive win was a 28-7 dismantling of a very talented Mater Academy squad in week one. Despite the set back against St. Thomas Aquinas, Brian Edwards assured us that the Patriots are still focused on winning the district 12-8A title and making a deep run in the playoffs.

"We just want to come out and set the tone against everyone we play," remarked Edwards.

The Patriots take on 0-4 South Plantation next and Edwards said his team isn't taking anything for granted.

"This week we're focused on taking away their big plays, taking away their running game, and watching for when they come out in that dual set and taking away their trick plays. They throw the ball so that's a good thing for us DB's, we get some of that action with the ball in the air," offered the 4-star safety.

Edwards describes his style of play as a both a ball hawk and a head hunter.

"When it's time to come down and hit I'm gonna come down and hit, when it's time to cover I'm gonna do my job and hopefully make a big time play," boasted Edwards.

In speaking to the young man from Miramar one gets the impression that he doesn't lack for confidence and approaches the game with maturity and discipline. When asked if his team is looking ahead of South Plantation to the matchup with defending state champion Flanagan, he offered the following wisdom:

"Right now we're taking everything one game at a time, but with the Flanagan game coming up next week we've still been watching film, paying attention to detail, so we're prepared going into both games," responded Edwards. "Our coaches want us to stay away from negativity and trash talk, so when it's time to come out on the field we let our play do the talking."

The senior assured us that even though he is receiving a lot of attention from colleges and the next level's promise knocking at his door, he is enjoying the process and living in the moment.

"My senior season is fun being able to compete with my teammates and making sure I got out there and going hard, knowing this is my last year. This is my last one and I don't get it back so I'm going out there and taking in everyday because I want to be able to remember every moment that I had out there on the field," offered the Rivals250 4-star.

The natural question that spawned from this response was why, if he was enjoying the process and living in the moment, would he commit so soon in his recruitment to Miami.

"Coaches Banda and coach Hartley wanted a commitment form me at the time, and I thought it was a good fit for me. I also wanted to see what colleges had faith in me, and would stick there with me. I can see that now, there were a few schools that still let me know they want me in their program. So I continue to see that and I still plan to take my visits," said Edwards.

He also mentioned that Syracuse, North Carolina, Louisville, Florida, and Colorado still kept coming at him while schools like Mississippi State and LSU kind of fell off.

"You know, schools are in their seasons right now, so I'm gonna focus on my season, and let them focus on their season, so it's kinda hard to be able to communicate. But I know after the state championships they'll be back in touch," opined Edwards.

He said that he plans to take all of his official visits after the season and that Miami, Louisville "for sure", Syracuse, North Carolina, Nebraska, Colorado, and Florida were all in the mix. When asked if he had a top-5 outside of Miami he said that everyone was still even. According to Edwards, Florida hasn't been coming as hard as they were before he committed to Miami, but they are still in touch and they may not know he is still weighing his options.

He said that he talks or texts with Louisville secondary coach Cort Dennison everyday and he has a great relationship with Louisville especially because his teammate and secondary mate Kadeem Roach is committed to the 'Cards. Look for Louisville to get an official visit after Miramar's season is over.

Edwards also mentioned that he has ties to Syracuse and that he had a great time visiting campus.

While he didn't say if a decommitment from Miami was imminent, he did say he is keeping his options open and listening to what other schools have to say. What is clear, is that if Miami wants to earn his signature on national signing day, they will have to stay on him and ward off the pursuit of other teams down the stretch.
