For the class-of-2012, the season is complete. All the blood, sweat, and tears that were left out on the field, is now a thing of the past. Bigger things lie ahead for these student-athletes. Whether it be to play college athletics or just attending a university and furthering their education, they will continue on the right paths and better themselves each and every day.
The FlaVarsity 160 was developed to highlight, in our opinion, the top 160 college football prospects coming from the state of Florida. These athletes were tremendous on the field during their high school careers, but they also have the potential to do great at the collegiate level. We do not simply look at stats and pick the top players using numbers, because numbers do not always tell the whole story. We watch them in person, during the off-season, on game film, and take into their efforts in the classroom. All of these aspects are important when looking at success at the next level.
It was very difficult to select the best player from the class-of-2012. As always, there are so many high profile players in Florida that it is difficult to single out just one individual. There were six players who, at one point in time, were in the discussion to be considered the top player in the state. These six student-athletes had terrific senior seasons, have bright futures at the next level, and will all be heading to major universities next year. Let's take a look at the six players who were in the final discussion.
Nelson Agholor, the star athlete from Berkeley Prep high school, had a tremendous year at running back. He dominated on the ground and led his team to one of their best seasons in school history. Agholor has narrowed his recruitment down to Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Southern Cal, and will likely decide on signing day.
Eddie Williams, the talented prospect from Arnold high school, is a player that can dominate from many positions. During his high school career, he played quarterback, running back, wide receiver, linebacker, and defensive back. There really is very little that Williams can't do on the football field. He is committed to the University of Alabama.
Tracy Howard, the lockdown cornerback from Miramar high school, really took his game to another level and dominated during his senior season. He will choose from Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, and Southern Cal on signing day and will be an impact player from day 1 next season.
John Theus, the mammoth offensive lineman from Bolles high school, is heading to the University of Georgia next season. The 6-foot-6, 292-pound lineman has a very bright future and could be a 4-year starter for the Bulldogs. If he continues to work hard, I have no doubt in my mind that we will be hearing his name called early in the NFL Draft, in a few years.
Randy Johnson, the lightning-quick running back from Miami Norland high school, was absolutely dominant during his final season. He earned the honors of "Mr. Football" for his efforts on the field and deservedly so. He will be heading to the University of Miami next year and will do some great things in year one.
Mario Pender, the strong, shifty running back from Island Coast high school, has tremendous overall ability and showed that this season. He averaged 14 yards per carry on the season and at times, made the opposition look quite foolish when they attempted to tackle him. He just enrolled early at Florida State University and will be a key component in the running game next season.
It is very evident that all six of these players are more than deserving to be named the #1 player in the FlaVarsity 160, but in the end, there can only be one. We want to congratulate all 160 prospects who made this list and wish all student-athletes nothing but the best in whichever path they choose upon graduating from high school. Let's take a look at the final edition of the FlaVarsity 160 for the class-of-2012.
