Every now and then, there are quarterbacks who all they do is win. And may also get overlooked by the talent around them on a very good team.
Gainesville's Marquis Robins-Cato would seem to be one of those Quarterbacks.
Cato went 25-3 in his two years as a starter with the Hurricanes, going 14-1 in his senior season of 2012 while leading Gainesville High all the way to their first state championship game appearance since the school's only state title in 1980.
While Gainesville High School lost in the 6A state championship game to Miami Central, it can't take away from the season the Hurricanes and their QB had in 2012.
Cato threw for 2,129 yards with 30 TD's and only 9 interceptions and was named the first-team quarterback on the Gainesville Sun's All-Area team.
Despite all this, with teammates like running back Rapheal Webb signing with Vanderbilt, wide receiver Chris Thompson with Florida, and linebacker Keith Kelsey Jr. with Louisville, Cato is having a hard time finding a place to play college football.
The only schools interested at this point are Division II schools like Benedict College and JUCO Coffeyville (KS). Cato visited D-II Nebraska-Kearney and was interested in the school, but was told recently that they no longer had any room for him.
"I'm not being picky, I just want to play football somewhere," Cato said. "I'm trying to keep my head up and hope some more offers come after signing day."
Cato has just started talking to Stetson as well. The Hatters will start their program in 2013. But he also figured more Division I-AA offers would come and is surprised there isn't more of a market for a quarterback who has had as much success as he has on the field.
"I'm a winner, I like to win," Cato said. "I was 25-3 as a starter, and the team made it one game from a state title. I feel like a person who sets an example as a leader, and I hope someone will realize that."
Cato is 6'2", 195 pounds and a great student with a 4.1 GPA and 23 ACT score. He has been offered preferred walk-ons with Florida, Florida Atlantic, and UCF, but is waiting to see if he and his family can make it work financially to try one of those schools. But he adds he will walk-on if it comes down to that.
Cato left Gainesville High as one of the most successful quarterbacks in school history, leading the Hurricanes to the regional finals and state championship game in his two seasons as starter. Now with national signing day over, he hopes some school out there will pay as much attention to him as they have been to his teammates.
"I think I can definitely be a role model for a team in college," Cato said. "I will be glad to join whoever wants me to play for them and won't complain. Playing football is what I want to do."
