FlaVarsity Football Analyst John Patton (follow him @FVStaff on Twitter) and staff analyst Doug Pugh (follow him @pughsview on twitter) continue to break down the FlaVarsity Top 25 Pre-season poll. Here's our No. 14 team.
WHO: Miami Norland Vikings
2011 REWIND: Norland finished 15-0, culminating the year by beating Crawfordville Wakulla, 38-0, in the FHSAA Class 5A state championship game. Miami running back signee Duke Johnson (207 carries for 2087 yards with 27 touchdowns) led the way and capped his final prep campaign by being voted Mr. football.
TOUGH TO BELIEVE: Palmetto, beaten 35-27 by the Vikings in the state semifinals, was the only team Norland played last year not to lose by double digits. NHS beat opponents by an average score of 39.6-12.6.
BY THE NUMBERS: The Vikings averaged 5.7 sacks-a-game last season, and many of those QB crashers are back. The two statistical leaders (Illinois signee Teko Powell and Paston Hinzey), who combined for 27 sacks, have graduated. But now-senior outside linebacker Shafique Neloms is back after recording 12 sacks in 2011.
PLAYERS TO WATCH : Neloms, Sr. DE Paul James, Sr. DE Torrin Young, Sr. DT Rafiki Lindsay, Sr. LB Treyvon Williams, Sr. DB William Townsend, Sr. DB Raymond Attley, Sr. DT Anari Ragin, Sr. OL Joshua Mincey, Sr. OL Quamaine Jones, Sr. DB Jerimiah Dinson, Sr. WR Derrick Barnett, Sr. SS Tyrone Campbell, Jr. RB LaKeith Stafford, Jr. WR Kendrick Edwards, Jr. LB Dreshown Dean, Jr. WR Zayquon Tyson, Soph. RB Shaquille Green.
OUTLOOK: No doubt it will be difficult to find replacements for the nine Class of 2012 seniors (particularly Johnson) who signed national letters of intent with colleges. But if any team can do that, it might be Norland.
Six offensive and nine defensive players return from last year's undefeated state champs, and expect them to be hungry to continue those winning ways.
This is an experienced bunch with numerous Division I prospects, led by James, who lists defending BCS champion Alabama, Illinois and West Virginia as the early leaders for his services.
FOUR GAMES OF FOCUS: Miami Northwestern (9/7), Miami Southridge (10/12), @Miami Jackson (10/19), Key West (11/2)
