It was a tale of two halves. The first half it was all Niceville as the JV and Varsity back-ups rolled to a 16-0 victory behind of the efforts of Niceville's freshman sensation Jeffrey Toney. The 6'5 quarterback; already 4 star basketball prospect (according to Floridahoops.com) threw for 2 TDs and ran in a 2 point conversion.
However, once the 2nd half begun, it was all Tate High School, as they raced to a 13-0 lead. Tate's Rising junior QB Sawyer Smith lead Tate on two scoring drives with his arm and his feet. Last year's 7A district runner up was in complete control until Niceville's freshman RB Jordan Tinder sparked Niceville's comeback. Taking a handoff to the left, Tinder showed off his blazing speed has raced 55 yards down the sideline in what appeared to be a touchdown. However, marked out of bounds at the four, his counterpart Tyler Head, a big bruising back, finished the quick drive, scoring from the four and after the PAT, Niceville was back in it, only down 13 to 7.
Soon after, Elijah Stove, Drew Frederic, and Niceville took over. After each made big plays on defense to give Niceville the ball back, Elijah Stove quickly raced 42 yards on an end around, and then Drew Frederic threw a strike to Aaron Willis for 38 yard TD to give Niceville a 14 to 13 lead. Niceville finished the scoring after Frederic found Stove for a 30 yard gain, followed by a scoring run by Frederic for the final score of 21 to 13.
Niceville, fresh of a 7A State Championship appearance, will open the season on ESPNU vs Alabama power Clay-Chalkville at Hoover as part of a double header. The first game will be Miami Central vs Hoover.
