OCALA -- Close games were a common theme on Day #1 of the 39th annual Kingdom of the Sun boys' basketball tournament at Ocala Vanguard.
Seven of the eight games were decided by eight points per less, including the first four games by five points or less.
Gainesville began the day with a 60-57 win against Coral Springs Christian. Sophomore Ike Smith led the 'Canes (9-3) with 15 points, while 6'7 Long Island signee Nura Zanna led the Crusaders (8-4) with 22 points.
In the second game, junior guard B.J. Taylor, who has been offered by the University of Miami, led Orlando Boone to a 49-44 win over Miami Senior. Taylor finished with 15 points for the Braves (10-3), followed by Stanford signee Schuyler Rimmer with 13 points. Senior Allen Baez led the Stingarees (8-4) with 17 points.
Rimmer was one of three of the top 10 seniors in the state who were in action.
Florida signee Chris Walker was held to eight points as Bonifay Holmes County fell to host Ocala Vanguard, 73-38, and Memphis signee Rashawn Powell led Orlando Dr. Phillips with 24 points but the Panthers (8-4) fell to Morgan County (Ga.) , 58-54.
In that game, the Bulldogs (8-2) were led by future D-I juniors CJ Turman and Tookie Brown, who combined for 42 points.
The backcourt duo of Marcus Owens (Lamar signee) and Terrence Johnson (South Alabama) combined for 44 points as Deerfield Beach (17-1) defeated Panama City Rutherford, 63-59. Junior Khaliel Spearman poured in 21 points in a losing effort for the Rams (11-2).
A total of 12 of the 16 teams are currently ranked in the tournament, which concludes on Saturday. Here are the results from Day #1 and the upcoming schedule for Day #2:
