PALM BEACH GARDENS - Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens) Panthers 2014 DB Shawn Boone is becoming a highly sought-after recruit at this time.
With 13 offers so far -including the likes of Florida State, West Virginia, Ole Miss, N.C. State and USF -
Boone said he wants to take his time and get to know the schools that are competing for his services.
"I'm just taking it day-by-day," Boone said. "I'm looking for an academic school that will give me the opportunity to grow as a student athlete. I also want to develop a good relationship with the coaching staff and get a chance to earn playing time as a freshman."
Boone recently spoke with Ron Cooper, who was hired by USF as its defensive backs coach and assistant head coach.
"He told me he really loves the way I hustle and play the game of football," Boone said. "He loves my tackling position and how I can play any position in the secondary. He loves the way I have a nose for the ball."
So what will it take for USF to land the hard-hitting defensive back?
"I'm not sure at this moment," Boone said. "I don't think I'll really know anytime soon."
Boone said he has visited USF a few times already. His most recent appearance there was on the weekend of Sept. 29, 2012, when the Bulls faced off against in-state opponent Florida State at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa - a 30-17 home loss to the Seminoles.
Is a return trip to USF in order for Boone sometime soon?
"Yes," Boone said. "It's a Florida school and it's not too far from home. I just don't know exactly when I'll get a chance to come back and visit."
Boone, who was one of the best DB performers at the Nike Football Training Camp in Miami on March 17, said his primary focus right now is to continue honing his craft.
"I had no problem with any of the drills and one-on-ones," Boone said. "I feel like I did really well out there. I feel like I'm one of the best defensive backs in the state right now. I have no doubt about it.".
Boone's next appearance will be at the Rivals Camp Series - Presented by Under Armour in South Florida on March 24.
"My mindset is to be explosive in all my position drills," Boone said. "I want to dominate throughout the camp with my competitiveness. I just want to go there and ball out."
