Southern Shootout Day 1 Recap

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –Trailing 46-27, Blanche Ely went on a 29-2 run to defeat Sagemont 56-48 Friday night in the Hoop Exchange Southern Shootout at Westminster Academy.

Derrick Lovett scored 19 points, Lamont Evans had 13 and Jaylen Black added ten points to lead Blanche Ely.

Sagemont was led Raphael Hosssou’s 16 points and Sergey Grishaev’s 11 points.

Sagemont jumped scored the first eight points of the game and finished the first half on a 10-0 run to lead 36-25 at the break. In the third quarter the Lions picked up where they left off at halftime by scoring the first 12 points of the third quarter.

Right when it looked like Sagemont had control of the game, the Blanche Ely started its own run scoring the final 12 points of the quarter to cut its deficit to seven.

It took Sagemont almost two minutes to score in the fourth quarter and when it did score, with 6:15 to play, those two points were the Lions’ final points of the game.

Chaminade-Madonna rallies to defeat host Westminster Academy

Justin Allen and Johnny O’Neil each scored 16 points while Dax Kaye added ten points, and had two key steals that resulted in four late points, to lead Chaminade-Madonna to a 62-56 win over host Westminster Academy in the final game on the first day of the Southern Shootout.

In a back-and-forth contest where neither team led by more than eight points, Chaminade-Madonna was resilient during the game’s final two minutes coming up with defensive stops and converting them into points. Then Chaminade-Madonna sealed its victory by making four-of-four free throws to close out the game.

Sophomore forward Ben Middlebrooks led Westminster Academy with 25 points, 12 rebounds and two steals.

NOTE: Due to a scheduling conflict and Friday the 13th traffic on the Florida Turnpike, we were unable to make it in-time to see more than the final minute of game No. 1 of the Southern Shootout. In that game Mater Lakes Academy defeated Cardinal Gibbons 64-57.
