Southern Shootout Day No. 2

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Miramar High School built a 17-point lead early in the third quarter then held off a hard charging Dwyer team to win the first Hoop Exchange Southern Shootout game on Saturday 53-47 at Westminster Academy.

The Patriots led by one-point at the end of the opening period but outscored Dwyer 19-8 in the second quarter to take a 12-point lead at the half. Leading by 17 early in the third quarter Miramar went cold from the field as the Dwyer defense locked in and its offense started scoring with more consistency to cut Miramar’s lead to 50-47. That was as close as the Panthers would get.

Brent Davis scored 18 points for Miramar and Michael Lott added 11.

Johnny Ranson led Dwyer with nine points.

THE STAT DOESN’T LIE: Miramar connected on 89.6 percent of its free throws (26-of-29) while Dwyer made a paltry 11-21.

SAINT ANDREWS HOLDS ON AGAINST DILLARD

Saint Andrews had three players score in double-digits led by 14 points from Devin Hines to defeat Dillard 48-45 in the second game of the day at Westminster Academy.

The Scots led by 13-points early in the fourth quarter but had to fend off a late surge from Dillard and hang on for the victory.

Josh Minott scored 13 points and Yale-bound Yussif Basa-Ama added 10 points for Saint Andrews.

Dillard point guard Ivan Reynolds scored a game high 15 points and Darryl Burrows added 10 in the loss.

BALANCED SCORING LEADS STRANAHAN PAST WESTMINSTER ACADEMY

It is hard to remember it but Westminster Academy led Stranahan by three at the end of the first quarter. That’s because the Mighty Dragons outscored the Lions 23-6 in the second stanza then withstood a late challenge from the Lions en route to a 77-67 victory.

Stranahan led by as many as 25 points then may have begun resting starters a bit too early because there was no quit in the Lions. Stephan Dibongue led the Lions comeback but Westminster Academy could only get within eight at 75-67 and that came with 19-seconds left in the game.

The Mighty Dragons had four players score in double figures led by Daquion Vickers with 15 points, Mario Bynes scored 13, Thaddeus Squire had 11 and Chayse Culpeper added 10

Dibongue had a game high 27 points – 22 in the second half— in defeat. Ben Middlebrooks scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Caleb Mueller added 12 points for Westminster Academy. It was Middlebrooks’ his second double-double of the Southern Shootout.

NORTHEAST HOLDS OFF FOREST HILL

Northeast had four players score in double figures and held off a Forest Hill fourth quarter rally to notch a 64-61 victory over the Falcons in the final game of the Hoop Exchange Southern Shootout Saturday night.

The Hurricanes used their size and length advantage to take, and hold, control for most of the game leading 51-36 after three quarters of play. In the fourth period the Falcons began scoring at all three levels to swoop in and whittle down Northeast’s lead but ran out of time.

Jameon "J.J." Harris, Wesley Cardet and Matthew Bewley each scored 14 points for Northeast and Ryan Bewley added 10.

Forest Hill wing Donovan Draper scored a game high 16 points, Troy Joseph had 14 and D’Ante Daniels added 11. Draper played with an injured wright hand and will have X-Rays on Monday according to a team source.
