Here is a (far too early) look ahead at the FHSAA Class 1A state football playoffs. This is the first in an 8-part series.
WHAT: Class 1A state playoffs
TITLE GAME DATE:Dec. 7, 2012
DEFENDING CHAMPION: Monticello Jefferson County
2011 RUNNER-UP: Chipley
THE TOP CONTENDERS: Bratt Northview (4-2), Jefferson County (1-5), Trenton (5-0), Lake Butler Union County (6-0)
DON'T COUNT OUT: Cottondale (3-1), Graceville (3-2), Bonifay Holmes County (4-1), Panama City Bozeman (4-1), Chipley (3-3), Port St. Joe (3-2), Blountstown (4-1), Bristol Liberty County (4-2), Cross City Dixie County (4-2), Chiefland (4-2), Newberry (4-2), Pierson Taylor (4-2)
THE SKINNY: Look at Jefferson County's record and laugh all you want, but just remember, the Tigers lost five games in 2011 and still held the big trophy at season's end. And no one in last year's playoffs finished a game within 20 points of JCHS. Until someone in 1A shows it can topple the Tigers, they remain the pick.
