Telling ESPNU and a national television audience "I've stayed humble about it and stayed close to my family. That's helped me make this decision."
Howard and Lewis led the Patriots to the 8A state championship game where they lost to Tampa Plant 30-21. Mirmar won the 6A title in 2009 over Deland.
"Some days I thought I knew where I was going and some days I wasn't sure," Howard said. "I'm going to spend the next three to four years furthering my education and playing football at 'The U'".
"The oppoortunity is there," Howard said. "
Why not play in my hometown? I got along with the coaches really well."
Howard joins several other high profile players who have not paid any attention to rumors of Miami's possible NCAA sanctions.
