Winter Park Rotary Tournament
Last week Bob Harvey hosted the Winter Park Rotary Basketball Tournament

featuring some of the best talent in the Central Florida area. The
field was loaded with a mixture of teams including state powers such as Orlando
Edgewater, Deland, Orlando Jones and up and coming teams like Winter Park,
Daytona Beach Mainland Orlando Oak Ridge and Lake Howell.
The tournament featured a round robin format during the first days with the
championship game played on Saturday Dec.8.
The championship game featured 2 of the top teams in the state in Deland vs.
Orlando Edgewater. The game featured two of the best players in the nation in
senior Darius Washington for Edgewater and junior Keith Brumbaugh.
Both players put on a show in the championship game as Orlando Edgewater
prevailed with the victory.
Darius Washington walked away with MVP of the tournament for a record 4th
time. The all tournament team consists of Brandon Johnson Orlando Edgewater,
Blake Young Orlando Oak Ridge, Keith Brumbaugh, Dwight Mitchell of Winter Park
and Jeremiah Rivers of Winter Park. Darius Washington also won the
3-point shooting competition while Blake Young was a repeat winner of the slam
dunk competition.
Team Observations
Deland High- Deland begin and ends with it post players.
They are led by 6’8 senior David Kilgore and 6’9 junior Keith Brumbaugh.
(Florida Varsity’s number 1 rated junior player) Kilgore provides
rebounding for the team and Brumbaugh provides everything. He is the best
shooter on the team according to Coach Zeoli and always look to involve his
teammates. Brumbaugh also knows when to take over a game as seen
in the final against Edgewater. For Deland to be successful, they must get more
help from there backcourt of Marc Fisher and Sheldon and Shayland Patrick.
Orlando Oak Ridge- Oak Ridge is a team that should have beaten Deland
in the first game. They are led by high flying guard Blake Young.
Young scored 80 points in the three games that his team participated in. He
plays hard every game with no fear of losing. Young is help by
Sean Turner. Turner is a hard nose post player who also can sky.
Coach Presley also points out senior David Noel and juniors Jimmy Chatelain and
Marquis Alexander to be contributors as well.
Orlando Lake Howell- Lake Howell is coming off of a year in which
their team made it to the state semi-finals before losing to eventual champion
Jacksonville Raines. Coach Kohn is in his first year and has a
team full of underclassmen. They are led by senior Pat Calathes. The
6’10 center and St. Joe’s signee has a very good shot for big man but he plays
too much on the perimeter. The future of this team is very bright with a
freshman backcourt of Joey Rodriquez and John Roberson. Roberson
is an up and coming star. He has a killer instinct and had one of the best
shots in the tournament.
Winter Park- Winter Park is another one of those fundamentally good
teams that can beat anyone. They are led by seniors Dwight
Mitchell and Jeremiah Rivers. Mitchell is the catalyst for the team.
He gets his team in the right offensive sets and leads the defensive
charge. Rivers is the scorer on the team. He fights through picks
and seems to always make the open jumper.
Orlando Jones- The 3A runners up looks like they are ready for
another run. Although they came up short against Edgewater, Jones showed
enough promise that they can make another run at a title. They are led by
senior Antoine Dade. Dade is a 6'7 demon in the post. In his first
game of the year he went for 20 plus points with over 20 rebounds.
Unfortunately for Jones he was held in check as Edgewater collapse on him all
game. Jones did get great play from sophomores Jarvis Williams and Calvin
Liptrot.
Orlando Edgewater- Edgewater rebounded from an early lost against
Orlando Dr. Phillips to win the tournament. They were led by All State
players Darius Washington and Brandon Johnson. Everyone already knows
about Washington, who did his regular thing in the tournament averaging around
25 points, but the player that makes the offense go is Brandon Johnson.
B.J. helps take the pressure off of Washington and is a field general for the
Eagles on the court. Edgewater does miss the inside rebound presence of
Kenny Ingram who at 6'6 230 can help take the load off of Quinton Thornton.
Again Edgewater has proven to be one of the most dominating teams in the state,
as well as the country.
After doing the tournament for 17 years, Bob Harvey has seen some of the best
players in the Central Florida Area. We asked Mr. Harvey for a top 5 of
all time and he lists Darius Washington Orlando Edgewater, Vince Carter
Daytona Beach Mainland, Tony Bobbitt Daytona Beach Mainland, Josh Kohn Lake
Howell, and Ronnie Murphy of Oviedo.
Next stop Lakeland Tourney Dec 13th.
